What’s new in Bancroft?

There are always things brewing in Bancroft, some of which are a variety of unique and delicious, handcrafted beers available from the Bancroft Brewing Co. located at 2 Hastings Street North.

Give blood and give back

On behalf of Canadian Blood Services, I’d like to urge the residents of Bancroft to come and join us at our next blood donor clinic.

Not in my back yard

“Not in my back yard,” otherwise known as NIMBY, has been a rallying cry for some time against a variety of developments. Sometimes it’s positive, as when communities object to hazardous waste. Sometimes it’s negative, like when neighbourhoods object to someone buying property. It depends on the situation.

Suicide a rural reality

More than seven per cent of the deaths recorded by the east regions of the Ottawa and Kingston offices of the Coroner’s Office between 2012 and 2014 were a result of suicide — where out of 8,684 death investigations for these offices, 641 were suicide. The east region of the Kingston office is made up of Northumberland, Haliburton, Kawartha Lakes, Peterborough, Frontenac, Hastings, Lennox and Addington, and Prince Edward. The east region of the Ottawa office is made up of Lanark, Leeds-Grenville, Stormont, Dundas, Glengarry, Prescott and Russell, Ottawa, and Renfrew.

Wollaston firms up no-spray resolution

Wollaston Township council has tidied up a matter from their Jan. 28 meeting where a resolution passed resulted in a letter being written to Hydro One requesting that they not spray Garlon RTU or similar herbicides within the township’s boundary for maintenance of their hydro-line corridors. This action was taken in response to a large delegation by a community advocacy group Citizens for a Better Wollaston (CFBW) which opposes the herbicide spraying.

Spring is here

And…Time. Someone call it. Winter is officially over. It’s spring! It’s cloudy and dreary and wet outside the office window today, March 21, but I couldn’t care less. It’s minus 1 degree out right now and I might never wear my winter coat again.

Bylaw is against Tim Hortons policy

It is with great frustration that I write this letter to the editor, in hope that Bancroft council will focus on the issues facing our town, rather than being involved in matters that they have no information on, nor ask for consultation on.
