Wollaston Fire Department deserves support

May 5, 2016

To the Editor:

Re: social media posts critical of the fire department.

These views do not represent our community as a whole. I understand that when there is tragedy in our community, emotions run high. Our firefighters and more so, our fire chief, need our support more now than ever. They are on the front lines, taking the brunt of public opinion, while they put their lives on the line to keep us safe.
Meanwhile, their families’ and lives take a back seat. Later they get to deal with the aftermath of these emergencies. My sincere apologies go out to Rick Middleton and his team. I am very sorry that you have been treated so badly by the people you have sworn to protect.
I cannot and will not stand at the end of a firehose and fight a fire. Nor could I cut a person’s broken body from a crumpled car. I could not perform CPR on a heart attack victim. So my hat goes off to you, for all you do while under the scrutiny of those who could not possibly fill your shoes.
I ask town council to make sure an adequate wellness program is in place for our volunteers to keep their minds and bodies healthy.
Once again, a big thank you to Rick Middleton and his team, for keeping our community safe.

Linda Patterson
