Tennis club looking for new members

May 11, 2016

The Bancroft Tennis Courts officially went into use this weekend, as the Bancroft Tennis Club started registering members for the upcoming season.
The courts are located between the arena and York River school. Back in 2009, the club came to a deal with the town that in exchange for their putting up half the cost to refurbish the courts, its members would have exclusive use of them on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays until 1 p.m., and on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 4 to 8 p.m. (At other times, they are open to the general public).
The club uses the time well, organizing its own Tuesday evening house league, a session on Wednesday evening for adult tennis novices, and tournaments and round robins every Saturday through to September. There’s also a “Lively Ladies” morning every Friday, starting at 8 a.m. sharp (What did you think was meant by ‘Lively’?)
Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings are for ‘drop-in’ play – matches arranged between members or with a guest (for a $5 guest fee).
And the cost for all that court time? $60 a person for the entire season. So rather than “Tennis, anyone?” (supposedly the first line in Humphrey Bogart’s acting career), now membership convenor Jenny Gwilliams can proudly call “Tennis, everyone!”
