At a morning assembly last Wednesday, North Hastings High School handed out its awards for athletic performance.

Although a small secondary school, NHHS fielded over a dozen extra-mural teams, and had some good results at Quinte, Central Ontario Secondary School Athletics and even Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations.

The most touching presentation was to Corey Mace.

In recognition of his multi-year leadership of both the junior and senior football teams, Mace’s No. 33 sweater was retired. In addition, he received the resiliency award – not for what happened on the field, but what happened on the road.

Mace was driving back to his home in Coe Hill last December, when he fell asleep at the wheel, causing him to crash. Mace was pulled from the wreck with life-threatening injuries by paramedic Matt Musclow, who attended the scene with first responders. The NHHS football veteran remained in a coma for a week, fighting for his life.

Mace has no memory of the next month. He spent nine weeks in hospital, coming home with various pieces of metal in his body, including two long rods in his pelvic area. Mace’s family and principal called his full recovery a miracle. The award marked his resiliency for not only surviving the crash, but for gaining back full mobility.
