Bancroft votes for change

October 28, 2014

By Nate Smelle

The air inside the York River room at the Bancroft Eatery and Brew Pub was thick with tension as Mayor Bernice Jenkins and a handful of her fellow incumbent councillors waited for the results of the 2014 municipal election. Once all of the votes were tallied in Bancroft only three incumbents were re-elected. The Mayor was thrilled to be re-elected, and said she looks forward to working with the new team.
“Thank you to my supporters for returning me to the Office of Mayor for the Town of Bancroft,” said Mayor Jenkins. “Congratulations to all candidates for caring enough to put their name forward. At the end of the process the people decide who they wish to represent them.”
At the same time, Jenkins said she was also sad to lose her friends and fellow councillors Peter Whitehead, Don Koppin, John Kirby and Wayne Wiggins.
“I will miss the current councillors who were not returned.”
“We came a long way in four years. Combined, they share a lot of experience and expertise. I wish them well and I am sure each one will continue to contribute to the wellbeing of the town. We have four new faces at the council table on Dec. 1. I am excited to see where we will go with the new energy and new ideas.”
Jenkins is hopeful the new council will continue to keep building the momentum that has been mounting over the last few years. There are many things in the works right now, she explained; and expects that it will take a little time for the new council to get up to speed.
“I am looking for cooperation and hard work and I believe we will only go forward,” she said.
Re-elected Councillor Paul Jenkins also had mixed feelings about the results.
“I mean no disrespect to anybody that was elected, but the amount of effort and time that’s gone into the various committees, etc. now goes back to square one,” he said.
“They were progressing, but I think there was a lot of misinformation on the street that resulted in this. There has been a lot of valuable experience lost.”
Councillor Charles Mullett was also one of the three incumbents re-elected in Bancroft. He is grateful to the people of Dungannon for re-electing him and said he is looking forward to the next four years.
