Global Warming

To the Editor,

In a less than a month, Canadians will choose a party and prime minister to govern this country and it's distressing that no-one running for office has directly addressed the major issue of our time – and indeed, future times – the problem of global warming. It's not just the next four years that will be affected by the decisions made soon but what kind of world we'll be leaving for our children and all future generations. As more carbon dioxide is added to the atmosphere, more heat will be trapped and temperatures will continue to rise as they have doing for quite a while. The result is that oceans are rising, droughts are affecting larger areas, wildfires are burning out of control, glaciers are melting and food sources are threatened. It was a drought in Syria the past four years that exaggerated the social problems that already existed and lead to the refugee crisis presently being dealt with.
The party in power now lead by Stephen Harper is the least willing to confront this issue. He is more concerned with lining the pockets of friends in the oil industry than with addressing global warming. The exploitation of the tar sands is the greatest environmental disaster around and it was a major plank in his economic plan for this country. It's no wonder that Alberta went orange after the Saudi pulled the rug out from underneath that boondoggle. The world would breathe easier if the whole country did that.
