Youth killed in ATV accident

By Nate Smelle

For the second time in the last month the community in the Bancroft area are mourning the loss of one of its youth. On Tuesday, May 19 just before 8:30 p.m. officers from the Bancroft detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) along with paramedics responded to the report of a single ATV accident on Airport Road in Faraday Township. Arriving on the scene they discovered the ATV and its 17-year-old driver, Riley Wilson without vital signs. After attempts to resuscitate Riley failed the Hastings Highlands teen was declared deceased at the scene.

North Hastings High School's principal, Ken Dostaler told Bancroft This Week that everyone at the school and in the community is still in shock from this sudden tragedy.

“It has been a very, very tough week for a lot of the kids and the staff, but we will all get through this together,” he said.

Family, friends and community members gathered at the Bancroft Pentecostal Tabernacle on Saturday, May 23 to mourn the loss of the beloved youth, and to celebrate his life. The investigation into the collision is ongoing, and is being conducted with the assistance of the OPP's Technical Traffic Collision Investigators.
