Ryan Jenkins, a student at Our Lady of Mercy elementary school in Bancroft, was honoured at a special luncheon held by the Algonquin-Lakeshore Catholic School Board. He and student Julia Yakabuski of St. Martin of Tours School in Whitney, were declared “beacons of hope.”

They were lauded for their involvement in their school life, their help to others, and their demonstration of the values of Catholic education.

Jenkins' classroom teacher's letter of nomination saluted his hard work as a student, and his kindness in helping others with their studies. He is a “reading buddy” for students in lower grades, and assists with the kindergarten class. “His work has impacted many;” the citation reads, “and he is among the next generation of leaders.”

He was accompanied to the ceremony by his principal, Patricia Flagler-Edwards, and his parents, Geoff and Leslie.
