Update: One dead, shooter still at large in Wilno

September 22, 2015

By Nate Smelle

One person has been confirmed dead after an unknown shooter opened fire in the tight-knit community of Wilno. The shooting occurred at a residence on Szczipior Road in Wilno. The OPP reports that as a result of information they received during the ongoing investigation, officers attended a second location, a residence located on Foymont Road‎. Sgt. Kristine Rae of the Bancroft detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police confirmed that the shooter is still at large and should be considered armed and dangerous. At present OPP Emergency Response Team (ERT) and Tactics and Rescue Unit (TRU) officers are on scene searching the area for the armed male suspect. She also says “residents in the area should remain in their homes and report any suspicious activity.”
Corinne Higgins, owner of the Wilno Tavern located across the street from where the shooting allegedly took place says she has received very little information regarding the tragedy that is still unfolding in her hometown. Most of the information, including the notice to remain secure in their homes has came to them via social media, she says.
“It is very scary and I am really nervous because we don’t know what’s going on,” says Higgins.
“The thing is, is that we probably know the people involved, which makes it way too close to home.”
Stay tuned to Bancroft This Week as the situation evolves.
