Bancroft Lions to collect used eyeglasses on Canada Day

June 23, 2016

In just about any dresser drawer, you can generally find an old pair of eyeglasses that are no longer being used. Yet, that pair of eyeglasses can change another person’s life for the better. So can an old pair of sunglasses, or magnifiers, or even lenses and frames separately.

The World Health Organization estimates that there are over 150 million people around the world who suffer from sight problems that can easily be corrected with eyeglasses, but they lack the resources to obtain them. In some countries, sun blindness is a threat for people – especially children who can’t obtain sunglasses.

That’s why the Lions will be in Millennium Park on Canada Day to receive donations of old eyeglasses. All donations will be sent off to our national recycling centre in Calgary. There they will be cleaned, repaired if necessary, sorted, packaged and shipped to places where they are needed.

Imagine you could help a young child learn to read, or help a student to succeed in their studies, or an adult to get a job to support their family. Imagine you could help a senior citizen maintain their independence. This is what the donation of a pair of used eyeglasses can do.

Please check your home to see if there are any eyeglasses that no one is using anymore. Bring them to the Lions booth in Millennium Park on Canada Day. It will create a real cause for celebration.
