On Thursday, Jan. 8 the junior and senior girl’s volleyball teams got the honour of being the first teams to play in the newly renovated gymnasium at North Hastings High School and they did not disappoint. The Huskie’s were hosting the junior and senior teams from Centre Hastings High School and Marc Garneau in Trenton, two tough teams that are often ranked higher than North Hastings.
The junior team struggled against the Centre Hastings team dropping two sets 25-13 and 25-18, but managed to beat Marc Garneau in three sets 25-11, 12-25, and 15-13 in a nail biting third set. Coach Janet Beauchamp said that “Despite a season disrupted by the holidays and snow days, our team has stayed focused.” She said that their focus allowed them to “handle some tight matches well” such as the third set against Marc Garneau and that win has built up the girl’s confidence moving forward.
The senior girls struggled in their opening set against the number one ranked Marc Garneau team losing 11-25, but they pulled it together and almost took the second set dropping a 23-25 heartbreaker. The game against the Centre Hastings team was a slugging match, but the Huskies were hungry for a win and managed to take the first set 25-18. They almost took the second set as well losing a close one 23-25 setting the stage for an exciting third set. The Huskies struggled during the third set and at half time things were not looking good for them as they were down 1-8, but the Huskies were determined and rallied back taking the third set 16-14 from the previously undefeated Centre Hastings team.
Coach Alex Comrie had this to say about the senior team’s efforts so far stating that, “This has been a great season for the girls. They have shown time and time again that they are able to compete at an extremely high level against some very amazing talent from the south. It was very exciting to have our first home game back in the new and improved Husky Den and the girls rose to the occasion. I am very proud of the girls’ efforts this season and would like to thank both York River Public School and Bird’s Creek Public School for allowing us to practice during our gym renovations. Go Huskies!”
